History of British Berkefeld Filters

The recognition of the necessity for a safer water supply dates back to 1835 in London, England. Queen Victoria, alarmed by the connection between unclean water and cholera and typhoid epidemics among her subjects, enlisted the expertise of John Doulton, renowned for Royal Doulton. She tasked him with leveraging his knowledge of ceramics to create stoneware for a gravity water filter.
This royal initiative progressed in 1862 when John’s son, Henry, introduced a carbon water filter, offering an efficient and easily renewable purifying medium. This development aligned fortuitously with Louis Pasteur’s advancements in understanding bacteria, demonstrating how porous ceramic can filter out these hazardous microorganisms. This marked the culmination of the discovery of gravity-fed water filtration.
By 1901, Sir Henry Doulton and Royal Doulton had garnered global popularity for applications in hospitals, laboratories, and residential water filtration systems. The company continuously enhanced its ceramic filters, making them self-sterilizing, and coined the trade name “British Berkefeld.” Relief organizations recognized the benefits, utilizing these filters to provide clean water to over 140 countries.
In 1998, Berkey® New Millennium Concepts® formed a distribution partnership with British Berkefeld, inspiring the name “Berkey®.” The success with British Berkefeld Water filters led to the creation of their own Black Berkey® Purification Elements. Some Berkey® dealers still offer British Berkefeld filters, and New Millennium Concepts® maintains the original website at britishberkefeld.com.
